How to get started!

Electric or acoustic guitar? You decide!

We often get asked, “What do you need to set up a guitar school?” It’s a great question! While our own music school now boasts over 100 students, we began in a spare bedroom!

Here’s a quick guide to get you started on your journey to amplify your teaching studio;

Electric or Acoustic guitars?

The good news is, you can accommodate both! For acoustic students, they’re self sufficient, for electric guitar students, it's easiest if you provide a guitar amp in class. Opt for an amp that can handle multiple students.

While high-end multi-channel amps are great, they can be costly. A more budget-friendly solution is to use a basic amp with a small, user-friendly mixing desk.

Guitar Storage

A multi-rack for 5 to 7 guitars is ideal for students to store their instruments when they arrive.

Music Stands and Writing Space

One music stand between two students can work if space is tight.

For writing activities and games, a table and chairs are ideal, but if space is limited, clipboards and markers on students’ laps or the floor will work.

Seating

Choose chairs without arms for flexibility and comfort. Backless chairs encourage good posture, and adjustable-height chairs are perfect for growing students.

Foot Rests

Proper posture is crucial, so provide foot rests. Yoga blocks are a cost-effective and durable option that can be easily adjusted.

Guitars for Rent

Offering guitars for rent is a fantastic way to take care of students who may be hesitant to purchase an instrument right away. You could offer weekly guitar rentals at a nominal fee, which helps students commit without long-term obligations. If you use an online booking system or have a credit card facility, you my already have the option to automatically collect weekly payments.

Floor Plan

Plan your room layout carefully. Position electric guitar players near amplifiers to minimise trip hazards. Position left-handed guitarists where they won’t bump into other students. A well-thought-out layout reduces accidents and enhances learning.

Additional Tip: A Whiteboard

A whiteboard can be a handy teaching tool.
